Evaluation

I have started work on an interactive Powerpoint presentation to present my evaluation. I will incorporate audience feedback from a focus group I am about to hold on the effectiveness of my final product; and concentrate on what parts of my newspaper are most effective and what could be changed to better suit the demands of the target audience if I were to produce my coursework again.

Ancillary Tasks

For the poster, I have used the postmodern element of pastiche by emulating the layout of the iPhone app home screen. The iPhone is a very popular and well known product among my target audience, and the "app" system it uses aims to provide news, sport, entertainment etc easily at your fingertips - the same principal which my newspaper aimed to follow.

Therefore I felt that setting the features of my newspaper out as "apps" on a home screen would both identify it as a similar convenient source of news and information, whilst the pastiche element would also allow carry the semiotic connotations of popularity that the iPhone enjoys.

I also used the same strapline, logo and fonts on the poster, as I did on the front cover of the newspaper itself, and in the radio advert (strapline). This provides a recognisable link between the three and creates a brand identification, so instantly the readers will know what my poster is advertising. In the case of the logo and fonts, they become a semiotic sign of my newspaper which further enhances a uniform brand image, which could then be used in other advertising publications and would be instantly recognisable as being from my newspaper.

In the case of the radio advert I went with a simple script which incorporated basic facts about the newspaper and the strapline - again for brand identification and to get the points across easily. The use of the strapline again means the radio advert has sufficient linkage with my other products. I chose a Liverpool accent for the voice over as this is common among my target audience and therefore provides them with something to identify with, therefore ensuring they will pay attention to the advert. The music bed is electro - a popular genre in my target audience thereby further appealing to them. Sound effect stings serve to both break up chunks of information to make the advert easier to listen to, but also to grab the attention of the audience.

Ancillary Tasks - Research and Planning

In addition to my local newspaper, I have the task of producing a radio advertisement and a poster advertisement. I am going to briefly research the conventions of each of these media texts before the construction.

RADIO ADVERT

I am Head of Production at a student community radio station,
99.8FM KCC Live, so I am already familiar with the conventions of a radio advertisement. I will need to source a suitable bed for the advertisement, which due to my younger target audience will be up-beat and possibly electro music. Stings (attention-grabbing sound effects) will also be neccesary to make my advertisement start out and distinguish key points in the advert itself.

With the vocals, I aim to find someone with a strong scouse accent to voice my advert - thereby relating to the demographics of my target audience, most notably where they are from and their younger age. I will also use the convention of having a hook tagline in my advertisement - a spoken slogan that can also be used on my poster to provide a uniform identity.

I have made the decision to use Adobe Audition to produce the advertisement, as from my radio work I am familiar with the software; meanwhile it is also industry standard - I have used it at other large Bauer Media owned stations such as Key 103 on work experience - which is a testament to the quality of sound it produces, and its usability.

POSTER

In my research I identified that posters are not a typical convention of newspaper advertisement; although I did find that such poster campaigns existed - for example The Guardian below:

I will use these adverts as an inspiration for my production, possibly producing mine with the postmodern theory of pastiche in mind. You can see that these adverts aim to use innovative and interesting colours, images, and text to communicate with the reader - therefore I will try and think of something similarly innovative and attention-grabbing with my poster.

My poster will not be overly-detailed, featuring simply the name, tagline, and a few basic facts. Therefore it will be easily read and therefore easily remembered - the aim of a poster advertisement.
